Nilgiri Farmers Producer Company (NFPC) was formed to empower farmers of Nilgiri District, Tamil Nadu many of who are struggling to make their ends meet. Due to the Economic hardships many farmers have migrated to the plains leaving their Centuries old habitat and culture. The NFPC will help the existing farmers get remunerative prices for their produce and would also Ensure consumers get better quality products at an affordable price. NFPC will encourage the farmers of Nilgiris District in selling their produce directly, eliminating middlemen.The company would be functioning as a bridge between the producers and the consumers.

By making all the Nilgiri farmers to join hands under one umbrella, the collective efforts are expected to help reduce the farmer’s day to day struggles. Not only these collective and co-operative efforts will bring down the Input costs associated with Agriculture and Allied activities (purchasing farm equipment, quality seeds and fertilizers) it will also provide help fix prices for the farmers produce by collective farming operation and management strategy by the way of consistent and quality supply of farm produces to the Urban buyers as well as Wholesalers. Due to the efforts of NFPC it is envisaged that there will be reverse migration to the Hills and the custodians of the land will continue to protect the fragile eco-sensitive UN recognised Nilgiri Bio-Sphere.

The NFPC will help turn our farmers into traders to sell their produce at remunerative prices and would benefit farmers about 400 villages within Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu. These farmers are mostly small land holding farmers. Most of them barely get by struggling with unproductive soil, plant diseases, pests, and inconsistent rainfall/weather. Due to ever reducing grazing lands for the livestock many sold them out as they could not handle them anymore due to both environment and economic reasons. What used to be number of livestock in each house is now the population of livestock for the entire village. Reliable markets for the farmer’s products and good information about pricing are hard to come by, and it is a challenge for the government policies/schemes to reach and serve the entire Nilgiri region and benefit farmer’s interest well.

There are three main verticals that NFPC is working on – Tea, Vegetables and Dairy. NFPC has recently got into an agreement with Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) for providing consultancy services for various NFPC projects.
